“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”

― Sir Terry Pratchett, A Hat Full of Sky

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle

According to legend, two families of dragons came into being in the very first days of the world’s creation: Bahamut, the noble Platinum Dragon, made the metallic dragons—gold, silver, bronze, brass, and copper. Cruel, five-headed Tiamat made the chromatic dragons—red, blue, green, black and white. These groups share a mutual animosity that originates in the enmity between Bahamut and Tiamat.

Ages ago, a fire-breathing red dragon called Sharruth rampaged up and down the Sword Coast. Three metallic dragons joined forces to battle Sharruth and imprisoned her beneath the ocean floor, believing seawater would quench her fire and keep her bound forever. But Sharruth’s fury, legend says, caused the undersea volcanic activity that formed Stormwreck Isle.

In all likelihood, Sharruth is long gone and entombed beneath the island, but chromatic dragons whisper that she still lives and will one day emerge from her prison. One fact is undeniable: The powerful magic embodied in such an ancient dragon has left a permanent mark on Stormwreck Isle. That magic has drawn other dragons to the island throughout the centuries, making it a recurring battlefield in the conflict between chromatic and metallic dragons that threatens to disrupt the serenity of a local refuge called Dragon’s Rest—and this is where the adventure begins!

Bound for the cloister of Dragon's Rest, four adventurers arrived on Stormwreck Isle, each for their own reasons. They were not unknown to one another, but nor were they friends, for they didn't yet know that their various missions would somehow align.

Their small ship had barely made port when things went terribly wrong: Right there on the beach, before they had even finished unloading their belongings, a pack of waterlogged zombies lurched out of the sea to attack everyone by the pier! Thankfully, they had chosen the best possible time for their attack, since our heroes were far from easy targets: The scuffle lasted only moments before they had bested the undead menace.

Amira, the towering tiefling warrior, cut through the enemy with her trusty battleax, while the dour marksman Nicholas found what had once been his fellow humans to now be easy target practice for his bow. Despite her small stature, the gnomish jeweler Tiran demonstrated how precision matters in more than gemcutting, as she skillfully disabled zombies with her thrown daggers. The scarred but noble cleric Vintor called upon Moradin, chief god of the dwarven peoples, to smite the sodden zombies that remained, and the conflict was swiftly over.

The Wreck of the Compass Rose

The guards and scholars of Dragon's Rest were grateful for the adventurers' timely intervention, and they were led by several of the cloister's human and kobold inhabitants to meet Elder Runara, their leader. After seeing that her guests had been well fed and cared for, the elder told them that these had not been the first undead to menace the sanctuary—in fact, such attacks had been happening sporadically for several months.

Of course, each of the travelers had come to Dragon's Rest for other reasons; they had questions to which they needed answers, as did so many who made their way to the island cloister. Runara listened to each of their concerns, offering to help them however she could in exchange for the service of protecting her people from the zombies: Amira, accompanied by her friend Tiran, had come hoping to discover why her mouse companion Mortimer had suddenly turned to stone. Nicholas, bearing the crimson dragon scale he always carried with him, sought information to help him track the monster that had destroyed his home village. Unlike the others, Vintor had made the journey to bring a prisoner to Stormwreck Isle, where many criminals were exiled to either find rehabilitation and redemption at Dragon's Rest, or else to fend for themselves elsewhere on the inhospitable island. After the day's events, however, the dwarf found himself more interested in the sudden zombie attacks suffered by the cloister.

A good night's sleep was interrupted early the following morning, when an alarm spread through Dragon's Rest: Another group of zombies was attacking! Still dressed in their nightclothes, the adventurers rose in response to the ruckus and hurried once more to the defense of the cloister denizens, some of whom only narrowly escaped the advancing undead thanks to their timely intervention. Afterward, as Elder Runara gravely described how these events were becoming more frequent, the group decided to join forces and seek out the source of the problem, if possible.

In their hunt for clues, Nicholas pieced together that while the two groups of zombies had been clad differently, both were wearing the remains of sailors' clothing. Following this revelation, Elder Runara recounted the strange tale of a merchant vessel, the Compass Rose, that had wrecked on the reefs near the island several months ago. The ship had visited Dragon's Rest before and nothing seemed strange until watchers saw it veer off course while approaching the harbor, crashing into the rocks. An emergency rescue party sent to help the crew found the ship empty, as though everyone on board had simply disappeared at once. The zombie problem, Runara explained, began a few weeks after that.

Noting that one group of undead had seemed...fresher...the adventurers resolved to start their investigation with the Compass Rose—it being the newest shipwreck in the area, it made sense that her missing crew and these newer, less decayed zombies could be one and the same.

Rowing out to their destination in a borrowed boat, the four discovered a strange scene, indeed: As it had been described, the Rose gave every indication that her crew had just vanished. A thorough sweep of the ship revealed interesting finds, like a stash of emergency cash hidden under the floor of the crew quarters and a secret compartment in the galley containing a magical spoon.
